Drawing a paper, writing a picture

Experience comes from failure. So if you fail hard you gain more experience. The writing part of my first research paper was really problematic, this time it seems to be much easier.
Well, I just find some similarity between this writing process and drawing. Whenever one draws something, in a non-naïve way, it's really difficult to get something decent unless you sketch it first. Sketching allows you to focus on the big picture first, and when one roughly knows where all the parts are going to be placed, detailed work can be done.
Even though I've never carved anything more complex than a wooden heart (Avocado kernel + Victorinox), I'm quite sure you have to give your creation a very rough shape first, and then proceed with detailed and delicate cuts.
With software you have to do this also. You never want to start by optimizations. You try to get a working prototype first, and improve it later. The good coder is the one who leaves enough room for subsequent improvements.
